Howard has been planning his latest build for years – he admits his first build of ‘Rock Solid’ in the 1980s was supposed to be a Mustang, but he couldn’t afford the $5000 required to buy a body, so bought a $100 Falcon instead! ‘Sweet Sixty Six’ was conceived to be a driver and although he has adopted plenty of late-model technology for the Mustang, Howard has kept the concept of the car true to the aim of ‘street’. Road-friendly and durable mechanical components include four-wheel disc brakes and suspension by RRS and a 302ci carb-fed Windsor V8 (built by multiple burnout champion Gary Myers) feeding its 385hp to a Tremec TKO five-speed transmission.
“Stuff it, I’m keeping this one forever! I’ve built it to be useful street cruiser with sensible but tough mechanicals. This is really the first car I’ve ever built to suit me, rather than for the judging sheets. It will be used, but is built to what I call a ‘street Elite’ level. This car will be capable of entering in the ‘touring’ classes of tarmac rallies. It’s going to go, stop and handle.”
